Metal powder injection molding has high requirements for raw powder, including powder morphology, particle size, particle size composition, surface smoothness, bulk density, etc.
There are two main methods of raw material powder for metal powder injection molding: hydroxyl method and atomization method. Metal powder injection molding requires very fine raw material powder, so metal powder injection molding requires very high requirements.

Milling method of MIM process raw materials:
1. The carbonyl method is a relatively mature preparation. The powder produced is autumn shaped and has small particle size. However, the carbonyl method can only produce a limited number of powders (such as iron powder and nickel powder). It is not easy to produce alloy powder containing more than two elements. In addition, the carbonyl method is highly toxic in the production process, and there is a problem of carbon content control in the production process.
2. The ultra-high pressure water atomization method has made many improvements in terms of increasing the spheroidization rate of the powder and increasing its compacted density, aiming at the shortcomings of low compacted density of the water atomized powder, which leads to low filling density during injection molding and requires more binders. The compacted density of the improved PAMCO new powder is 10% higher than that of the conventional water atomized powder, and the powder with higher compacted density is used, The required binder has been successfully reduced by about 20%.
3. The powder produced by the gas atomization method has high tap density, good fluidity, and requires less additives. With inert gas, the residual gas content of the obtained powder is at least one order of magnitude lower than that of the water atomized powder. However, generally, the particles of the gas atomized powder are relatively coarse, about 40-50um, and there are few fine powders that can meet the requirements of the process.
MIM powder requires high strength, so the powder particles should be small. The small particles are used to produce high density and high strength powder metallurgy products. The degreasing speed will be very slow, the cost will be relatively high, the shrinkage in the sintering process is relatively large, the advantages of sintering are relatively fast, and the molding defects are few.
The definition of ideal MIM injection molding powder should meet the following points:
1. The particle size is between 20 microns, and the powder is irregular in shape, which is conducive to better agglutination
2. No agglomeration of powder particles
3. The particles are dense without gaps
4. The particle surface is clean without pollution
